Economics AS/A2 Level at Kings Priory School
In GCE Economics you will look at the fundamental forces which affect our lives such as employment, prices, international trade and poverty. Economists are often in healthy debate with each other over these issues. It is this controversy which makes Economics lively and interesting and which allows you the opportunity to make your own judgements and form your own opinions.
There are several definitions of economics, with each trying to encapsulate the essence of the subject. However, most text books seem to agree that economics concerns the allocation of society’s scarce resources amongst the various uses to which they could be put.
There are two strands to Economics - microeconomics which focuses on individual firms and consumers, and macroeconomics where the economy is studied as a whole.
There are two modules at both AS and A2. The AS microeconomics course examines the way in which markets work to satisfy demand - and how they sometimes don’t work! The A2 microeconomics course focuses on Business Economics and the distribution of income. Macroeconomics at AS tends to focus on the UK economy whereas at A2 the wider EU and global economies are studied.
Both AS and A2 exams are taken at the end of the year. This allows students to develop analytical and data handling skills as well as an ability to take an overview of economic issues.
