Government and Politics A Level at Ysgol Y Strade

Course description

In addition to following the syllabus recent pupils have participated in events such as the European Youth Parliament, Mock-Convention of the United Nations as well as visits to the National Assembly in Cardiff Bay, the Parliament in Westminster and the International Politics Dept in Aberystwyth University.

  • Pressure Groups and Protest Parties
  • Political Parties

GP2:

  • The British Constitution
  • Parliamentary structures in Wales and the U.K.
  • The Core Executive in Wales and the U.K.
  • Multi-level governance in the United Kingdom

GP3a:

  • Electoral Process and Direct Democracy
  • Political Parties
  • Voting Behaviour
  • Pressure Groups

GP4a:

  • U.S. Constitution
  • The Congress
  • The Core Executive – The President of the U.S.A.
  • The Supreme Court

 

Entry requirements

At least 5 GCSE qualifications at grades A*-C.

Assessment

GP1: Examination of 1 hour 30 mins.

GP2: Examination of 1 hour 30 mins.

GP3a: Examination of 1 hour 30 mins.

GP4a: Examination of 1 hour 30 mins.

Future opportunities

The course aims to develop candidates’ knowledge and understanding of the political system in both Wales and the UK as a whole. One unit at AS, GP2 - Governing Modern Wales, has been developed specifically to address the needs of schools in Wales to
study the changing political position of Wales within the UK since devolution in 1997.
