Travel and Tourism Industry Introductory Diploma at Derby College

Course description

This course will help to develop learners' confidence, giving them a  good understanding of the travel and tourism sector and the work skills needed to succeed in the fast changing retail environment.

You will go on a number of visits to travel and tourism businesses and other establishments that will give you insights into the industry. You will also undertake work experience and lots of practical activities.

Learners will also develop their maths and English skills, which will support their main programme and help their future progression.  

Course content

During the programme, you will develop your knowledge of:

  • UK Tourism
  • Customer Service  
  • Package Travel and Tourism Products and Services
  • Promotional material for Travel and Tourism

Additional subjects and activities such as Functional Skills in English and Maths, work experience and tutorials will be part of the timetable. 

Entry requirements

The course is designed for learners who have a minimum of four GCSEs at grades D/E or above, including English and Maths, or equivalent qualifications. Candidates will be invited to College for an interview and a screening test as part of the application process.

It is essential that candidates show commitment to maintaining high standards of attendance and meeting deadlines. 


Assessment will be carried out using a variety of methods including role play, presentations and activities.  There is also an exam linked to airline operations.

Further Study
You can progress to an Intermediate Diploma in Aviation Operations, Travel and Tourism or Cabin Crew.

This course could be your first step towards gaining employment in the travel and tourism sector. You could enter a wide range of jobs in places such as travel agencies, theme parks and tourist information centres.
