An apprenticeship is a great way to gain new skills and for you to become a valuable asset to an employer. In order to become an apprentice you need two things: an employer willing to take you on, and a training provider who will equip you with training and learning skills required to be effective in your role. The learning is achieved mostly on the job, although it sometimes involves classroom learning too.
An apprenticeship allows you to earn and learn which means you get new skills, qualifications, and get paid at the same time. Apprenticeships are available in all sectors and industries throughout England. There are more than 200 different types of apprenticeships available offering over 1,200 job roles in a range of industries.
There are currently three levels of apprenticeships on offer within a variety of industry sectors. These are: intermediate apprenticeship (level 2), advanced apprenticeship (level 3), higher apprenticeship (level 4 and above).
An apprenticeship is a work based training programme which helps individuals develop both theoretical and practical skills. This enables you to become more capable and efficient in your job. You earn while you learn and gain a nationally recognised qualification-all without getting into debt!
You must be aged 16 or over.
You must have residence within England and not be in full time education You must have 5 A*-C GCSE’s including English and Maths. If you haven’t attained the required GCSE’s grades in Maths and English then you will be required to take a maths and literacy test.

All apprenticeships are employed and have a contract of employment. Wage rates are at the discretion of your employer with a minimum of £2.68 an hour for those aged under 19 and those who are 19 and over within the first year of their apprenticeship. From then on you will earn at least the national minimum wage. Ideally a wage should reflect job complexity and experience.
Your apprenticeship will be funded by your employer who might be eligible for funding from the government. For those aged 16-18 your employer can receive up to 100% of funding. For those aged 19-23 your employer can receive up to 50% of the funding for the course. Finally for those aged 24+ your employer will have to fund the course themselves or loans are available.
Apprenticeships are a great route into a career- especially if you have just finished full time education, recently left school or need valuable work experience. Apprenticeships aren’t just for young individuals and can all be undertaken by an existing workforce.
Statistics show that upon completion of an apprenticeship 85% of apprentices will stay in employment and 64% of apprentices staying with the same employer. However it will be at your employer’s discretion whether you are to be given a full time position at your company’s residence at the end of your course.
