Childcare and Education Level 3 Other Qualification at Weatherhead High School

Course description

This is a level 3 qualification for anyone wishing to work with children, parents and other childcare professionals. The professional modular course gives you the opportunity to combine real life work settings with the theory of child development. It is a 2 year course. You will spend two days each week in work placement and three days in school. The work placement is a compulsory part of the course and all students need to be fully committed to this aspect.

Entry requirements

Entrance onto the course requires 5 GCSEs at A-C, one of which must be English Language or Literature and by formal interview. You must also complete a successful Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

Assessment

The course is designed to be assessed at three stages - we would expect all students to complete all 3 stages. Award and certificate levels to be completed in year 12; the Diploma units in year 13 apart from unit 9 which will run across both years.

Award level = units 1 & 2

Certificate level = units 1, 2,3,4,5 & an external assessment

Diploma level = units 1, 2, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9, 3 optional units and 2 external assessments

AWARD LEVEL:

Unit 1: Introduction to working with children: assessment task

Unit 2: Development from conception to age 16 years - assessment task

CERTIFICATE LEVEL:

Units 1 & 2 above

Unit 3: Supporting Children - assessment task

Unit 4: Keeping Children Safe - assessment task

Unit 5: The principles underpinning the role of the practitioner working with children - assessment task

External assessment: short answer test based on a seen case study

DIPLOMA LEVEL

All assessment for Award and Certificate level and

Unit 6: Promoting a healthy environment for children - assessment task

Unit 7: Play and learning in children's education - assessment task

Unit 8: Caring for Children - assessment task

Unit 9: Development of professional skills within children's education - approx. 125 placement days, Practical Evidence Records, Practical Evidence Diary, Professional Development Profiles

3 optional units - all assessment tasks

External assessment - research task

Future opportunities

Successful completion of the whole course gives you the opportunity to seek employment in a wide range of childcare and education settings or to progress to university.

Further information

For placement you will need dark coloured trousers and flat shoes. You will be provided with a course polo shirt. The work placement is a compulsory part of the course and all students need to be fully committed to this aspect of the course. THE COURSE CONTENT IS LIABLE TO CHANGE FOR SEPTEMBER 2014.
