Further Mathematics (AS) at Nobel School

Modules are taken in Further Pure Mathematics; Statistics and Decision Mathematics. These modules have been chosen because they do not exclusively rely on A level Mathematics knowledge. As discrete modules you are able to study them concurrently with A level Mathematics.

What will I learn on this course?

This course will enable you to:

  • broaden and enrich your knowledge and ability in mathematics
  • underpin your AS level Mathematics skills.
  • develop abilities to reason logically and recognise incorrect reasoning.
  • generalise and construct mathematical proof.
  • develop an awareness of the broadness of mathematics and the opportunities for further study, the world of work and society in general.

Course content

Who would be a successful student of Further Mathematics?

This course will appeal to students who:

  • love mathematics and wish to study it further.
  • wish to go on an study a mathematics related degree at University.
  • enjoy the challenge of puzzles and tackling problems of a mathematical nature.
  • have a desire to search out new mathematical truths.
  • have the patience and perseverance to work very hard and then enjoy the extra satisfaction that your effort brings.
  • wish to complement studies in mathematics, all sciences and social sciences.

Entry requirements

Students will be expected to have A/A* grade in GCSE mathematics and be studying AS/A level mathematics.


AS Level

Further Pure Mathematics: Summation of series; Mathematical Induction; Roots of polynomial equations; Complex numbers; Matrices.

Decision Mathematics: Algorithms; Graph theory; Networks; Linear Programming.

Statistics: Representation of data; probability; Discrete random variables' Bivariate data.

A level

Future opportunities

National data tells us that anyone with a mathematics related degree earns about 10% more than any other degree. A wide range of employers regard mathematics as a prestigious A level and employ mathematicians for their thinking skills. A Further Mathematics A level makes you even more desirable.
