Design and Technology (Product Design) A Level at St Leonard's Roman Catholic Voluntary Aided Comprehensive School

Course description

Design and Technology is a practical subject where pupils develop capability through combining their designing and making skills with knowledge and understanding, helping them to design and make a range of practical products.

The pupils will develop their capability through: designing and making assignments in which they will put their capability to work to develop products that will meet real identified needs
- focused practical tasks in which they will develop and practise particular skills and knowledge
- critical assessment of products in everyday use in which they will explore and evaluate existing products and then use this knowledge and understanding to influence their approach to designing and making quality products
- analysis of the finished products and working methods of several contemporary designers
- the use of CAD/CAM and an awareness of modern industrial manufacturing processes

Course content


Students will have the opportunity to study and work with a wide variety of materials and components used in the design and making of 3D products. Students will work in both two and three dimensional forms.

Unit 1: Written Paper 2 hours
50% total AS mark
25% total A2 mark
The paper is based primarily on Materials and Components and candidates will need to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the working characteristics, physical properties, cost and availability that may influence choices in various design situations.

Unit 2: Coursework – 50 hours
50% total AS mark
25% total A2 mark
Coursework is arranged around a “portfolio” entry. Students will be engaged in the deisgn and making of three mini projects.

Advanced Subsidiary (AS)
50% of total award
Advanced level (A2)
50% of total award


At A2, the specification offers the opportunity to further develop the knowledge and practical skills from AS.

Unit 3: Written Paper 2 hours 25% of total

The synoptic assessment will test the understanding of the connection between the different elements of the subject - Materials and Components, Processes and Manufacture, Design and Market Influences, Environmental issues and their holistic understanding of the subject.

Unit 4: Coursework 50 hours 25% of total

A single substantial practical project and design folder will be submitted.

Future opportunities

Industry is always anxious to recruit people who can demonstrate their capability to: make decisions and think for themselves; understand the modern design and manufacturing process; produce high quality practical products. This A Level course is accepted as a University entrance for: Industrial Design – includes the design of many types of manufactured products – cars, medical equipment, household goods and agricultural machinery. Civil Engineering – covers the construction of large normally one-off projects – bridges, tunnels, harbours etc. Production Engineering – designing and managing the appropriate methods of production and manufacture of a range of products. Three Dimensional Design – divided into spatial and product design, covering interiors, displays, domestic goods, jewellery and furniture. Graphic Design – including photography, illustration, model making and audio-visual techniques.
