Business Studies AS/A2 Level at Sheringham High School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

Studying Business at A level gives you an overview of the challenges and pitfalls of running a business. As a potential owner or manager of employees you will gain invaluable insight and experience. Case studies, news reports and local business knowledge are used to enable students to develop understanding and evaluation skills.

Course content

At AS level this specification introduces the challenges and issues of starting a business, including financial planning. It then explores the key internal functions of business and how the management of these functions can assist in improving the effectiveness and performance of a business.

• Unit 1: Planning and Financing a Business
• Unit 2: Managing a Business

At A2 level this specification considers strategies for larger businesses and how these strategies may change according to circumstances. It considers the effects that external factors can have on businesses and how a business can plan for and manage change.

Entry requirements

Unit 1: 40% of AS, 20% of A level. Exam with short answer questions and extended responses based on a mini case study.
Unit 2: 60% of AS, 30% of A level. Exam with compulsory, multi-part data response questions.
Unit 3: 25% of A level. Exam with questions requiring extended answers based on an unseen case study drawing upon knowledge from AS units.
Unit 4: 25% of A level. Exam based on a pre-released research task and a choice of essays drawing upon knowledge from all four units.

Future opportunities

A level Business can be used to gain a place at university on business and some non-business degrees. As a course which shows a student’s interest in business operations and current affairs, employers are also often keen to employ students directly from A level study.

It is recognised that business students already have an insight into the different aspects of business that they may wish to work in. For example, accountancy, marketing and a variety of management training programmes.
