Applied Science BTEC at The Rochester Grammar School

Course description

We study the Applied Science course to broaden and deepen our understanding in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There is a focus on advancing practical and technical skills along with communication, teamwork, research and analysis.

Course content

This is a two year course. At the end the students will earn a Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science. This is equivalent to one A level.


Entry requirements

Grade 665 in separate Sciences or 6/6 in Core and Additional Science.


In order to gain access to The RGS Sixth Form, students must obtain 5 GCSE grades at 9-6 (A*-B) including English Language and Mathematics.


There are four units to the course:

Unit 1 - Principles and Applications of Science1

Unit 2 - Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

Unit 3 - Scientific Investigation Skills

Unit 4 - Choice of one topic from list (see prospectus)

Future opportunities

Applied Scince complements a range of other subjects including Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Design Technology and Geography.  It is a subject which requires you to be organised, self-motivated and detailed. It is useful in preparation for university study, employment, self-employment or training. Studying Applied Science could lead to a career in engineering, psychology, geography, environemntal science and many other STEM related fields.
