ICT Intermediate Apprenticeship at Boston College

Course description

The IT and Telecoms Professionals BTEC Diploma Level 2 Apprenticeship is for those who wish to pursue a career in computing as an introductory technician role. 

You will work in a technical role within a workplace for 4 days and have a day release at college, where you will study a Level 2 Diploma in IT.

Course content

The Apprenticeship framework consists of several elements which have been identified by employers as the skills you need if you want to find work in the Computing industry. 

These elements are: 
Maths - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

English - Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills, unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ICT - Level 1 or Level 2 is a requirement of some Apprenticeships unless an equivalent qualification has already been achieved. 

ERR - Employee Rights and Responsibilities, which includes health and safety, equality and diversity as well as employment legislation. 

PLTS - Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, which includes team working, creative thinking and reflective learning. 

*Vocational Element (Knowledge) - most Apprenticeship frameworks include off-the-job study for a technical certificate which is usually done at College. 

*Vocational Element (Competence) - all Apprenticeships include on-the-job training and assessment leading to a competence based vocational qualification. 

*On some frameworks, the knowledge and competence elements are combined into one qualification. 

During your Apprenticeship you will study a range of units including: 

- Developing own effectiveness and professionalism 
- Health and safety 
- Working with ICT hardware and equipment 
- Investigating and defining customer requirements for ICT systems 
- Customer care in ICT 
- Security of ICT systems

Entry requirements

5 GCSE's at grades D or above (New GCSE grade - 3 or above) including English and Maths (or equivalent). 

If you are unsure about meeting the entry requirements an alternative course would be the Information and Creative Technology BTEC First Diploma Level 2.


This course is 80% practice and 20% theory. 

You will be assessed through a competency and knowledge based components in the workplace and coursework at College.

Future opportunities

With successful completion of this Apprenticeship you could process onto the ICT Advanced Apprenticeship, or into employment.
