Business Studies AS/A Level at Hazelwick School

Course description

In Business you will gain an understanding of the range of decision-making that businesses face.  This involves an in-depth study of the following areas:

management and leadership

marketing

operations

finance

human resources

 

Please note you cannot opt for both Business and Economics.

Course content

The course is divided into the following subject content themes:-

Year 12 - What is Business?  Managers, Leadership & decision making.  Decision making to improve marketing performance.  Decision making to improve operational performance.  Decision making to improve financial performance.  Decision making to improve human resource performance.

Year 13 - Analysing the strategic position of a business.  Choosing strategic direction.  Strategic methods.  How to pursue strategies.  Managing strategic change.

Entry requirements

Grade B in Business (if taken at GCSE) or Grade 6 in English Language or English Literature (if not).  In both cases a Grade 5 in Mathematics is expected.

Assessment

Business exams draw on any of the content taught over two years.

Paper 1 - Business 1 - a written exam lasting 2 hours & accounting for 33.3% of the A level.  There are 3 compulsory sections:

Section A - has 15 multiple choice questions worth 15 marks

Section B - has short answer questions worth 35 marks

Sections C & D - require an essay answer from a choice of two essay questions

Paper 2 - Business 2 - a written exam lasting 2 hours & accounting for 33.3% of the A level.  There are 3 data response questions worth approx. 33 marks each and made up of 3 or 4 part questions.

Paper 3 - Business 3 -  a written exam lasting 2 hours & accounting for 33.3% of the A level.  There are 6 questions based on a case study.
