Biology A Level (AQA) at Co-op Academy Priesthorpe

Course description

Students will study a broad range of biological topics, so developing their understanding of scientific ideas and techniques.  Students will also be required to carry out a minimum of six practical activities in the first year and a furher six during the second year of the A level.  In addition, students will have many opportunities to learn and use practical skills to link therory with practice, deepening their knowledge and understanding.

 

 

 

Course content

Students will study a broad range of biological topics, covered in the course description, so developing their understanding of scientific ideas and techniques. Students will also be required to carry out a minimum of 6 practical activities in the first year and a further six during the second year of the A level. In addition, students will have many opportunities to learn and use practical skills to link theory with practice, deepening their knowledge and understanding. 

 

Practical skills will be assessed through examinations papers. Students will demonstrate their ability to be able to recall understanding from the entire A level course through synoptic assessment in the final examination paper

Entry requirements

Entrants to the course must have achieved at least five GCSE qualifications (grade 9-4), including at least two x 6 grades in GCSE Science subjects and at least grade 5 in GCSE Maths.

Assessment

Two examinations: worth 50% each

 Three examinations:  Paper one and two worth 35% each, paper three worth 30%.

Students will complete practical activities and be expected to apply knowledge and understanding in their written exams. Practical-based questions will form approximately 15% of the total assessment.
