Biology AS Level at Ashfield School
Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution and taxonomy. It is the subject that explains how things work: from the natural world down to your body and the cells within it. Recent research in biology has led to the development of controversial topics such as stem cell technology and genetically modified crops. Society must learn and decide how best to utilise advancements such as these. Study biology and make your decision from an informed position.
Topics studied include:
- Biological molecules
- Organisms exchange of substances with their environment
- Genetic information
- Variation and Relationships between Organisms
Minimum of a 7 and 6 in GCSE Science (or included in triple science grades), plus a 6 in GCSE Mathematics and a 6 in GCSE English.
AS Biology – has 2 x 1hr30 min exams (50% each) plus 6 required practical’s
Career prospects for Biology graduates are very good. Jobs directly related to a Biology degree include Microbiologist, Conservation Officer, Pharmacologist, Medical Research Scientist and Health Sales. In addition, and A Level in Biology is needed for entry to Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine degree courses.
