English Literature A Level at Gordano School

Course description

The course is based firmly on reading and analysing a range of literature: ‘classic’ and contemporary novels, modern drama and a variety of poetry. There is also scope for you to select your own texts, as well as opportunities for creative writing. You will become a confident and questioning reader, able to express responses to texts with fluency.

Course content

Year 1
Love Through the Ages
The aim of this topic area is to encourage you to explore aspects of a central literary theme as seen over time, using unseen material and set texts. You will look at two novels, a poetry anthology and a Shakespeare text.

Year 2
Building on the work you did in year one this aspect of the course takes the end of WW2 as its historical starting point and explores both modern and contemporary literature’s engagement with some of the social, political, personal and literary issues
which have helped to shape the latter half of the 20th century and the early decades of the 21st century.

Entry requirements

Evidence of high levels of commitment and teacher recommendation are expected.
Please be aware that you will be asked to purchase several of your own texts.

Future opportunities

English Literature, alongside other A-levels, is a good route to a very wide range of Higher Education courses and will support your study whichever academic or vocational course you take. It is essential if you wish to study English Literature and many English courses at university. Students who take English Literature are very employable due to their analytical and communication skills and can find themselves in a broad range of professions including: Teaching, Law, Marketing, Charities etc.
