The course provides an interesting and stimulating insight into the works of the human body, the processes of life and the relationships between humans and the environment. All aspects of Biology are covered and there is a strong emphasis on practical work. This ensures that those intending to pursue Biology at degree level are well prepared with an excellent grounding.

Assessment

AS Two unit papers (one 1 hour and one 1 3⁄4 hours) taken in June of Year 12 and centre assessed coursework done throughout the year.

A2 Incorporates AS assessments as well as 2 written unit papers (one 11⁄4 hour and one 2 hour, taken in Summer of Year 13). Coursework is completed throughout the year. The A2 qualification incorporates a significant element of synoptic assessment – ie the ability to apply knowledge and understanding of more than one area to a particular situation or context.

Future opportunities

Whilst AS/A in Applied Information and Communication Technology is not an essential requirement for Higher Education courses in Information Technology subjects, it gives an excellent grounding in this area of study. It is a very useful A Level for almost any course or employment since it develops good communication skills and a disciplined and logical approach to problem solving, combined with excellent ICT skills.
