Sport Performance Extended Certificate Level 2 at West Suffolk College

Course description

This course is designed to give learners a broad base in sport with the scientific knowledge necessary to study sports programmes at Level 3 and the opportunity to progress to a number of possible advanced courses in a variety of vocational areas.


Course content

Learners will be taught by a highly qualified and professional team, and will be given the opportunity to practically demonstrate skills learnt. The course covers a wide variety of subjects all relevant for the sports performer. Subject areas include: Anatomy and Physiology, Practical Sport, Fitness Training and Testing, Injuries in Sport, Effects of Exercise on the Body, Sports Development, Psychology for the Sports Performer, Development of Personal Fitness.

Any student aged 16 to 19 who does not hold a GCSE A* to C (9 to 4 on the new grading structure) or equivalent qualifications in Maths and English by age 16 will need to continue to study these subjects in each academic year.


Entry requirements

Four GCSE passes to grade D level. However, this course offers flexibility on the outcome of a personal interview and selection process with the curriculum staff.


Future opportunities

Learners with a merit profile may progress to the Level 3 Sport or may seek employment within the scientific areas, fitness instructor, and sports coach.

Of the students who completed this course last year 82% continued with Further Education and 18% secured employment.
