Course description

The NCFE Certificate in Sport & Physical Activity (Personal Training) is suited to students who wish to continue their academic studies in a specialised educational area. The course is aimed at 16-19 year olds who have just completed their GCSEs, or are looking to get back into education to study in this expanding and desirable subject area. The course provides a solid grounding for students wishing to enter the world of personal training, fitness instructing or sports therapy and its associated industries, either through progression to university or by entering employment.

Course content

The course consists of 6 units. During the course of the academic year, the units will be studied and assessed which will lead to achievement in a NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Sport & Physical Activity (Working in Sport & Leisure). On completion of the Certificate you will discuss with your tutors whether you wish to continue onto the Diploma or to progress to employment or other courses in the area. In addition the course also offers the YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instruction. Units Include: - Preparing for a Career in Sport & Physical Activity; Work Experience in Sport; Exercise, Health & Lifestyle; Fitness Testing; Instructing Physical Activity and Applied Strength & Conditioning.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs grades A*- C; these must include English or Math’s; PE is also desirable or a BTEC or NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport at a Merit grade. Applicants must be willing to be involved in all aspects of sport and exercise, including practical as well as theoretical.

Assessment

How will I be assessed? A wide variety of assessments will be used. The NCFE program will use continuous assessments and practical examinations. You will be able to track your performance as you work towards the pass, merit and distinction grades. Methods of assessment will include: reports, presentations, practical demonstrations, fitness sessions, posters, leaflets, experiments, interviews and discussions. To facilitate assessment, you will be expected to devote personal time for your studies. The YMCA Courses require you to be able to demonstrate planning, delivery and evaluation of safe gym and personal training sessions.

How will I be taught? The program is a combination of practical training and classroom theory sessions. Each lesson will provide you with assessment opportunities as you work to achieve your goals and targets. You will need to have an active passion in sport and fitness and your tutors will encourage you to discuss your own achievements as well as the issues in modern sport.

Future opportunities

What can I do when I finish my course? The majority of learners progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity course. Due to the diverse nature of the course, students are well suited to continuing their studies with degrees in sports science, sports studies and sports management being amongst the most popular. If you want to progress into employment the following areas in the sports and leisure industry would be suitable; health & fitness, personal training, fitness training or leisure centre management.

Additional Courses* During the course, there will be opportunities to achieve other qualifications in addition to your main NCFE program.
