Children's Play, Learning & Development BTEC Level 2 First Certificate at Shipley College

Course description

Success on this course allows you to work in a supervised capacity as an ‘Assistant Licensed to Practice’.

In addition to early years professional practice, you learn about how children grow and develop including how they learn through play and develop reading and writing skills. You also learn about healthy food choices for children, how to keep them safe and how to encourage positive behaviour.

You will work on assignments based on realistic workplace situations.

You also have the opportunity to study GCSE maths and English. For two days a week, you gain vital work experience in a relevant setting, for example, in a private day nursery and a primary school.

Entry requirements

  • 2 GCSEs at grade D (3) or above, including English or a Level 1 at Pass grade, plus a GCSE grade D (3) in English.
  • You will have an interview and further assessment to check the course is right for you.
  • You need to have a keen interest in working with children.
  • You will also need to have a clear Disclosure and Barring Service check completed at the start of the course..

Financial information

Please note, you need to purchase a College polo shirt (approx £11) and may wish to purchase a College hoodie (approx £17).

Future opportunities

After finishing the course, you can progress on to the Children’s Play, Learning & Development BTEC Level 3 or find work in a nursery, family centre or play work centre.
