Production Arts Technical Theatre is a high quality training programme which provides opportunities for students to explore all aspects of backstage production roles; instilling the skills, knowledge, and professionalism needed to progress onto a Higher Education course and succeed in the performance industry.

This course is aimed at students with a particular interest in Lighting and Sound Operation and Design and Stage Management. You will also discover Visual Imagery for stage and Props for performance with the opportunity during your second year to manage a team in your preferred specialist area.

You will explore a wide range of techniques and methods in each area and develop your skills with real production experience of the backstage roles that are essential for the staging of a successful performance. As a technical team you will work closely with production managers, directors and designers to create a variety of performance spaces.

Production Arts have strong links with producing and receiving theatres including West Yorkshire Playhouse, Opera North and Howard Assembly Rooms.

Course content

This course is aimed at students with a particular interest in technical theatre and stage management.

This course will allow you to develop your knowledge and practical skills as a lighting, sound and video production technician or member of the stage management team.

Entry requirements

If you are part of the new grading system for GCSE we would see a Grade 4 or above as the equivalent of a Grade C in this offer.

5 A*-C GCSEs including English plus successful interview.

Assessment

To achieve a qualification you will need to complete a minimum of 18 units during your 2 year programme of study. The course is accredited by BTEC and you will be assessed through a variety of different methods including:

  • Essays Research

Future opportunities

Most of our students tend to go onto Higher Education to study degrees in various backstage areas including: Technical Theatre, Stage Management, Events Management, Set and Props Making. Some will go directly into employment or apprenticeships within the performing arts industry.
