System Support Diploma Level 3 at Gloucestershire College

Course description

This course gives you the opportunity to learn more about the world of Systems Support and the role they play.

Do you want to become a front-line Systems Support technician or successfully operate a company’s IT helpdesk? If the answer to either of these questions is “Yes”, then the Diploma in System Support qualification is the right choice for you!

This is a vocational programme, building your practical skills, teaching you the knowledge you will need to become successful as a Systems Support technician. The college supports you by providing well-equipped labs and up to date computer systems which you can take apart, diagnose faults and repair.

Course content

Your studies will include:

  • Working on a helpdesk
  • Maintaining servers
  • Security and website systems
  • Training new users
  • Testing, installing and upgrading software and hardware

Over the two years, you will study 18 units. You will be given more details of the units at Interview or Induction.

Entry requirements

  • You will need to have successfully achieved 5 GCSEs, grades A* to C, including English and Maths, or successfully completed a Level 2 Diploma in Computing with merit and functional skills at Level 2.
  • Selection is dependent upon a successful interview, homework, completion of a 2-day selection event and a positive reference.

Assessment

Typically, Diploma programmes have no formal exams, preferring to test your knowledge and understanding through a mixture of vocationally relevant assignments and projects.

Assignments usually involve a high-degree of practical work although some will require you to complete background research before starting the task.

Most assignments will involve you doing work outside scheduled classes although your lecturers are fully committed to give you support when you need it. You will be expected to study an average of 12 hours per week outside of college classes.

Financial information

Students will have the opportunity to attend one or more course related day trips or activities during the year. A fee is charged at enrolment as a contribution towards these events.

Future opportunities

A full-time course, the Diploma in Systems Support is a programme equivalent to studying three AS-Levels. Successful completion of the course will enable students to progress onto the Extended Diploma for a second year of full time study, achieving the equivalent of 3 full A Levels. This gives good progression for either work or Higher Education (e.g. Edexcel Higher National Certificate (HNC), Higher National Diploma (HND) or BSc Degree).

Alternatively, you may wish to seek employment within the industry as a support technician.
