Course description

Further Mathematics is an A level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in A level Mathematics. It is designed to be studied alongside A Level Maths. For someone who enjoys mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and/or more sophisticated mathematical concepts.

It enables students to distinguish themselves as able mathematicians in the university and employment market. It makes the transition to a mathematics-rich university course easier.

Course content

Students study both pure and applied maths. Topics include complex numbers, matrices, hyperbolic functions and simple harmonic motion. Some of the pure mathematics can overlap or extends the A level toics. this can help to deepen/ broaden understanding and both A levels complement each other well.

Entry requirements

8/9 in GCSE Maths.

You must be studying A level mathematics in order to study Further Mathematics.

Assessment

The Further Maths course is assessed entirely through external exams at the end of the 2 years.

Financial information

As in A level maths, students will be required to have a graphical calculator. A deposit for the loan of the text book and they would be recommended to purchase revision guides.

Future opportunities

Any student planning to take a mathematics-rich degree (this covers a very wide range of academic areas - Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc., as well as Mathematics itself) will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics. Some prestigious university courses will only accept students with Further Mathematics qualifications.
