English Language and Literature A level at The Wensleydale School & Sixth Form

Course description

English Language and Literature builds on your GCSE studies. You will study language and literature as interconnecting subjects in order to deepen your understanding and enjoyment of the written word in all its forms. This course will appeal if you have an interest in reading a wide variety of texts; enjoy expressing your opinions and justifying your comments on texts and take pleasure in studying a subject which is relevant to your own life and experiences.

Course content

The course will enable you to:
- communicate insights gained from the combined study of literature and language
- develop your ability to use linguistic and literary critical concepts
- demonstrate your skills in speaking and writing for a variety of specific purposes and audiences
- respond to texts of different types and from different periods, making comparisons between them


Discussion forms the basis of most lessons but students and teachers also give presentations on aspects of texts. Students are expected to prepare for lessons and take effective notes. During the course you will study a range of texts from different periods.

Future opportunities

Study of English is a popular qualification for entry to a wide range of courses in higher education or for future careers, including Law, History or Marketing for example.
