Computer Science - A Level at Sandy Upper School

Course description

Year 1 Term1

Learners develop an understanding of the principles and concepts of computer science.

Topics covered are: + System architecture + Memory + Computational logic

Year 1 Term2

Learners understand the components that make up digital systems and how they communicate with one another and with other systems:

Topics include:

  • System software
  • System security
  • Networks

Learners develop their practical programming skills using Python.

Year 1 Term3 Learners analyse problems in computational terms through practical experience of solving such problems, including designing, writing and debugging programs.

Topics covers are:

  • Programming techniques
  • Programming development
Year 2 Term1

Learners understand the impacts of digital technology to the individual and to wider society.

Topics include:

  • Ethical and legal issues

Learners are given the opportunity to choose a computing problem to work through. Learners are required to analyse a problem, design a solution, develop a solution and evaluate the solution.

Year 2 Term2

Revision

Topics include:

  • Computer systems
  • Algorithms and programming
