Art A Level at Verulam School

Course description

This course looks to explore and develop a range of skills and ideas using variety of techniques and media and create a personalised portfolio of work, embarking on a creative journey through self-expression. You will work in sketchbooks and on A2 sheets to develop your project in your own way. Although you will initially work with guidance from your teachers at AS you are expected to increasingly direct your own projects to create your own individual outcomes. Students will also be keen to extend written analytical skills when looking at the work of others.


  • AS – UNIT 1 – Personal Investigation Portfolio (Coursework)
  • AS – UNIT 2 – Externally Set Assignment (Exam Paper) leading to an 8-hour examination
  • A2 – UNIT 3 – Personal Investigation Portfolio (Coursework)
  • A2 – UNIT 4 – Externally Set Assignment (Exam Paper) leading to a 12-hour examination

This subject will gain points for entry to University for a non-Art based course or lead onto a Foundation course, which ultimately leads to a B.A. degree in any field of Art and Design, Sculpture, Graphic Design, Textiles, Painting, Fine Art, Illustration, etc.

Entry requirements

A GCSE in Art and Design is essential for entry onto this course.
