Brickwork Advanced Apprenticeship at Derby College

Course description

The Advanced Apprenticeship in Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying) covers:

  • assisting with the organisation of resources
  • contributing to the progress of operations
  • establishing the occupational area
  • building complex masonry details
  • producing complex templates for construction aids

Course content

You will study:

  • City and Guilds Diploma in Trowel Occupations (L3)
  • NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations (L3)

Plus Functional Skills Maths and English at Level 2.

Practical and theoretical tests will be delivered throughout the programme of study.

Entry requirements

You should have completed an intermediate apprenticeship framework in Trowel Occupations (Bricklaying) at Level 2 within your trade area and achieved your Functional Skills in English and Maths.


Assessment is through observation of practical work and additional on-site assessments are required to complete the NVQ Level 3.  You may be required to undertake real trade projects on which you will also be assessed. 

Maths and English skills will be assessed through a controlled assessment or final exam.

You will be allocated an assessor who will visit you on site and discuss your progress with you and your employer.

Financial information

You will need to supply your own safety footwear.  A small charge may be made for other Personal Protective Equipment required to complete the course.

Future opportunities

You can progress to professional construction qualifications as a full-time, part-time or apprentice learner or you can continue to advance your career within the industry.
