Course description

What does the course aim to do?

• A-level Spanish helps students to develop confident, effective communication skills in Spanish and a thorough understanding of the culture of countries and communities where Spanish is spoken.

• It develops an interest in, and enthusiasm for, language learning and encourages students to consider their study of the language in a broader context.

• The course requires students to develop their ability to write and speak in Spanish with accurate grammar and syntax for a range of purposes and to understand written or spoken Spanish in a variety of contexts and genres.

• This course is suitable for students who have studied GCSE Spanish and wish to study Spanish at a higher level.

How will I study?

Studying Spanish at A-Level is fast-paced and dedicated to ensuring that all students make rapid progress. To aid this we use a number of different activities including:

• ICT based activities, quizzes and programmes

• Traditional text book learning

• Tailored themed or grammar based worksheets and games

• Group discussion and debate

• Individual speaking practice

• Translation and comprehension activities

• Authentic video, audio and film opportunities

• Topic days organised by local universities

Course content

Throughout the A-Level Course students will study the themes of ‘Social issues and Trends’ and ‘Political and Artistic Culture’ which are divided into the following sub-themes.

Aspects of Hispanic society

• Modern and Traditional Values

• Cyberspace

• Equal rights

Multiculturalism in Hispanic society

• Immigration

• Racism

• Integration Artistic culture in the Hispanic world

• Modern day idols

• Spanish regional identity

• Cultural heritage

Aspects of political life in the Hispanic world

• Today’s youth, tomorrow’s citizens

• Monarchies and dictatorships

• Popular movements

Students will also carry out an in-depth study of one literary text and one film in Spanish.

Grammar is taught explicitly throughout the course and will build on grammar and structures specified for GCSE. A full list of required grammar is available from the AQA website.

Students must also identify a subject or a key question which is of interest to them relating to a country or countries where Spanish is spoken and carry out their own Independent Research Project. They must select relevant information in Spanish from a range of sources including the internet. The aim of the research project is to develop research skills. Students will demonstrate their ability to initiate and conduct individual research by analysing and summarising their findings, in order to present and discuss them in the speaking assessment.

Entry requirements

Grade 5 in English and Mathematics plus 3 A*-C grades at GCSE with a points score of 5.5+ (which equals roughly 4xB/6 and 4xC/5), from the top 8 GCSEs taken in the first sitting.

Grade C in Spanish GCSE

Assessment

This qualification is linear. Linear means that students will sit all their exams at the end of the course.

Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing skills.

Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes (50% of A Level)

What’s assessed: Aspects of Hispanic society, Artistic culture in the Hispanic world, Multiculturalism in Hispanic society, Aspects of political life in Hispanic society and grammar.

Paper 2: Writing

Written exam: 2 hours (20% of A Level)

What’s assessed: One literary text and one film by means of one analytical essay per text/film.

Paper 3: Speaking

Oral exam: 21–23 minutes (30% of A-level)

What’s assessed: Individual research project and one of the four sub-themes by means of a presentation and discussion.

Future opportunities

Languages are the key to the exciting multinational world we live in and an invaluable skill to have. Learning a language can open many doors in the future, both personally and professionally, allowing you to experience cultures on a whole new level and integrate into many foreign societies. A language will also enhance your career opportunities and financial prospects in Europe and beyond. British businesses often cite a lack of linguists as a key concern and post-Brexit, languages in the UK will be even more sought after in order to boost the UK’s economy and trade. Having a language can increase your salary from 8 to 20% and will give you a head start on other potential employees when applying for jobs with international companies.

Am I suited to this subject?

Highly motivated and hard-working students will enjoy the variety of challenges that this course provides. We welcome all students who have a high level of interest in, and enthusiasm for, the language and culture of Spanish speaking countries. Students should be willing to develop their writing and speaking skills in Spanish.

What can I do?

Students are encouraged to establish and maintain links with Spanish speaking countries or native speakers. Independent study is essential and students are expected to spend a significant amount of time each week, consolidating and practising new learning. A deepening of grammar and vocabulary is essential, so students must also dedicate time to these areas as appropriate. Students are also encouraged to make use of the wealth of online resources and apps available to support their language learning (details provided at the start of the course).
