Media Studies A Level at Christ the King Catholic Voluntary Academy

Course description

Media Studies is both an intellectually challenging and practical subject with a thorough grounding in theory. Students will study key media concepts and theories, including Linguistics, Narrative and Genre Theory as well as Film and edit their own products.

Year 12

After studying an introduction to key media concepts and theories, students will undertake a coursework module which requires them to produce two media products consisting of a Preliminary exercise that demonstrates match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule as well as a main task: to research, plan, film and edit the titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last two minutes. Students will also study one examination module which covers the two areas of Textual Analysis and Representation alongside Institutions and Audiences.

Year 13

Students will study one coursework module which will require them to research, plan, film and edit three products: a music video, a digipak and an advertisement. Students will also study one examination module which covers the two areas of Theoretical Evaluation of Production alongside a study of contemporary Media Issues.

Entry requirements

Media Studies is a subject that by its nature requires students to consider individual, moral, ethical, social, cultural and contemporary issues. Students therefore need to have an enquiring and open mind and a genuine interest in the media. Students need to be able to work well individually and in a team, and also have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Students also need to embrace new technology and have creative flair.


As well as regular classroom and homework assessments of progress, students will be formally assessed though a combination of coursework and examination:

G321: Foundation Portfolio Coursework (25%),

G322: Key Media Concepts Examination (25%)

G324: Advanced Portfolio Coursework (25%)

G325: Critical Perspectives in Media Examination (25%)

Future opportunities

Media studies graduates typically enter careers in the media or cultural and creative industries including communications agencies; the Civil Service; Local Government, Marketing Organisations, Media Companies, Newspaper and Magazine Industry; PR Consultancies, Publishing Companies, TV and Radio
