BTEC Level 3 National Award in Children's Play Learning and Development at Garforth Academy

Course description

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate and Diploma in Childcare are both new two year courses using the 2016 specification and are equivalent to one and two A-levels respectively. Learners studying the Extended Certificate will carry out a minimum of 50 hours work experience in one Early Years setting. Learners studying the Diploma will carry out a minimum of 750 hours work experience in a Day Nursery during the first year and a Primary school during the second year. Work placement will be one and two days every week depending on the size of qualification undertaken and includes three block weeks for Diploma students each year.

 

Course content

There are 2 externally assessed units, counting for 66% for the Extended Certificate and 33% for the Diploma. Externally assessed units have to be passed in order to achieve the qualification. All other units are internally assessed and include Children's Development, Play and Learning, Development of Children's Literacy and Numeracy Skills, Safeguarding and Observation, Assessment and Planning.

A range of innovative and exciting teaching strategies are used which include guest speakers from the sector and visits to a range of Early Years settings. On successful completion of the course, Early Years Educator (EYE) status is achieved.

Entry requirements

5 GCSEs at Grades 9-4 (if no English/maths grade 4, may have to complete placement in school holidays)

A clear DBS is required before work placement can commence

Assessment

Assessment if through a combination of internally and externally set assignments, an external examination and a Practical Evidence Portfolio (PEP) which is produced using experiences, work examples and reflection from the workplace.

Future opportunities

Employment opportunities following the successful completion of these courses include nursery practitioner roles in schools and nurseries, teaching assistant roles, working abroad and working with children, young people and families within Social Services sector. Degrees in Early Years Teaching, Primary Teaching, Childhood Studies, Midwifery, Social work and Children's Nursing.
