Bricklaying Diploma - Level 1 at Dudley College

Course description

This course is for people interested in a career as a trades person, working in the construction industry. This course is ideal for developing skills in Brickwork. This is a practical and theory based course which consists of you working through a number of technical and practical units.

Course content

The Brickwork City and Guilds Level 1 Diploma will need you to complete specific units and topics. You will work towards the following units to make up the full qualification:

  • Unit 201/601 Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction
  • Unit 101/501 Principles of Building Construction, Information and Communication
  • Unit 102 Contribute to Setting Out and Building of Masonry Structures up to Damp Proof Course
  • Unit 103 Carrying Out Block Laying Activities
  • Unit 104 Carrying Out Brick Laying Activities
  • Unit 105 Carrying Out Cavity Walling Activities

Each unit will include an externally set assessment to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the unit.

Entry requirements

GCSE grades D-G and a keen interest in construction is essential. However, all applicants will be interviewed.

There is no need to worry about the costs of coming to college as there is lots of financial help available. Our finance and welfare officers will be able to talk to you about any help that may be available to you based on your individual circumstances.

Bursary fund



Students aged 16-18 attending a full-time further education course can apply to the 16-18 Bursary Fund for help with college related costs. More information about the 16-18 Bursary Fund can be found at the website: or by contacting our Student Finance team on 01384 363 555.




We will provide a free bus pass to help with travel costs for 16-18* year olds on full-time programmes, based on individual circumstances**. To qualify for a free bus pass***, you must live more than one mile from the campus at which you will be studying and not already be in receipt of other financial support, such as Care to Learn funding.


*Under 19 as at 31 August 2017.


**Students with learning difficulties or disabilities who are unable to access public transport may still be able to receive help – talk to our Student Finance team.


***Evidence of family income will need to be provided.

Future opportunities

Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying, upon successful completion of all of the elements of the Level 1 course. Many craft occupations can often move into supervision, management or technical support areas.
