Government and Politics - AS / A level at King Edward VI CEVC Upper School
Course description
This course will appeal to those students who:
have an interest in current affairs
enjoy debate and discussion on a wide range of political issues.
would like to develop their skills of explanation, research and argument.
are interested in the rights of the individual and the working of the state.
This subject will work well alongside a number of others, such as History, English, Geography and Philosophy.
Entry requirements
GCSE grade B in a humanities subject or English
Assessment
Unit One
UK People and Politics, including a focus on democracy, elections, UK political parties and pressure groups.
This is examined at the end of Year 12 in a 1-hour and 20-minute exam.
Unit Two
Governing the UK, which will examine the role of the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the UK constitution.
This is examined at the end of Year 12 in a 1-hour and 20-minute exam.
Unit Three
Introducing Political ideologies which will explore Liberalism, Conservatism, Anarchism and Socialism.
This is examined at the end of Year 13 in a 1-hour and 30-minute exam.
Unit Four
Other Ideological traditions such as Feminism, Ecologism, Nationalism and Multiculturalism. This is examined at the end of Year 13 in a 1-hour and 30-minute exam.
Future opportunities
This A-Level lends itself to a range of areas for further study. The skills of analysis, evaluation and argument that you will gain from this subject will aid study in most degree courses. Many universities offer Politics degrees, but subjects such as History, Social Science, Geography and Business will be supported through the study of Government and Politics.
Throughout the course you will improve your presentational skills, and your ability to turn research into a succinct argument or debate. These skills will be appreciated by universities, further education and employers.
