Graphics (Art and Design) A Level at Northgate High School

Course description

This course progresses naturally from GCSE and is intended to meet the needs of students who have an interest and aptitude in graphics and would like to undertake further study in design or take up careers for which design is relevant. The candidates are encouraged to demonstrate their abilities through projects that can be developed according to individual interests. The areas for study include: Advertising and Design Layout, Illustration, Computer Graphics, Typography and Packaging Design. The use of technology to aid graphic design and word processing will be encouraged and expected where appropriate.

Course content

AS Level consists of 2 units: Component 1 is a coursework unit and component 2 is an externally set assignment worth 40% of the AS marks. Students will pick from a choice of design briefs. The designing element will be carried out under controlled conditions for 10 hours.

A Level students: Component 1 is a coursework unit and component 2 is a controlled test of 15 hours. Students will pick from a choice of design briefs, have preparation time and then produce the final piece in the 15 hours.

Entry requirements

Subject specific entry requirements: Grade B in Design Technology or Art.

Future opportunities

As with other A/AS subjects for entry to degree level.
