Sociology A Level at North Bromsgrove High School

Course description

Sociology is a rigorous academic subject and is also rooted in the real world. It is the study of how society is organised and how we experience life. By taking the subject, you become a much more informed, questioning and critical citizen of society, and here is a promise: you will never look at that world in the same way again.

Course content

Exam 1 – Socialisation and culture (40%)
Cultural transmission, socialisation and the acquisition of identity, families and households, education

Exam 2 – Methods of sociological enquiry (20%)
The nature of sociological thought and the methods of social enquiry.

Exam 3 – Power and stratification (40%)
Social inequality and stratification. Crime and deviance - this option focuses on debates in contemporary society through a detailed study of crime and deviance. The social construction of crime and deviance are considered and the ways in which crime is socially distributed, explained and reduced.
