English Language at Hagley Catholic High School

Course description

Training students to think and analyse, to question and interrogate, to research and investigate, and to be reflective and critical.

You will study a wide range of texts and discourses. You will create texts and critically reflect on your own processes of production whilst analysing the texts produced by others.

Course content

Awarding body: AQA Specification: AS Y12 Categorising Texts 2hr written examination. Y12 Creating Texts Written coursework - two tasks (differentiated by genre, audience and purpose) and two accompanying commentaries. A2 Y13 Developing Language 2.5 hrs written examination. A2 Y13 Investigating Language Written coursework

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C including English Language at grade B.


If you are interested in language and want to develop your knowledge about its structure and functions, the ways it has changed over time and how it varies as well
as develop your skills as a writer then this course will be well suited to you.

English Language will enable you to:

•           experience and respond to a range of texts through discussion, analysis and creative writing

•           explore how purpose, audience and context impact
upon language

•           use linguistic methods to investigate a variety of texts and apply these within your own work.

You will study English Language through class teaching. There will also be individual investigation of texts with teacher support and guidance. There is plenty of opportunity to discuss issues and ideas and you will be expected to connect this with your experience of language and research by linguists. You will be expected to carry out wider reading and to complete tasks independently.

Future opportunities

Recent students have gone on to study English, including a student at Oxford, others are studying English with PE and Primary Teaching.

This course particularly complements Media Studies, Sociology, Psychology, History and other courses including arts and humanities.
