Physics at The Ripley Academy

Course description

AS – Module 1 Measurements and their errors, Module 2 Foundations Particles and radiation, Module 3 Waves, Module 4 Mechanics and materials, Module 5 Electricity.

A Level – Module 6 Further mechanics and thermal physics, Module 7 Fields and their consequences, Module 8 Nuclear physics and one of the following: Astrophysics, Medical physics, Engineering physics, Turning points in physics, and Electronics.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have B grade in Core/Additional Science and Maths GCSEs.  Students may be considered with C grades in the single science/Maths GCSEs under certain circumstances.


Assessment of AS Physics, a stand-alone qualification, takes place in June as two one and a half hour written examinations.

Assessment of A level Physics is achieved with three two hour papers, covering all nine modules, and including data analysis and practical skills.

Future opportunities

With a qualification in Physics you could go on to Further or Higher Education, studying Physics or a range of related subjects such as engineering, medicine and maths, being essential for engineering. Physics is also a well-respected subject in its own right and suitable for entry into a wide range of other professions, including law and technological subjects.
