Physical Education AS/A2 Level at Birchwood Community High School

Course description

Physical Education links well with other subjects at Level 3, particularly (Human) Biology and provides a pathway into a variety of higher education and degree courses. If a job is your next step, you will have acquired the skills and understanding necessary to be successful in a number of different types of businesses. 

This AQA course has been designed to build on prior knowledge at Key Stage 4 to enhance knowledge and increase understanding of the factors that affect performance and participation in physical education. The qualification looks to equip students with the skills and knowledge required for higher education and the world of work.

The course looks to offer students the opportunity to experience and develop an interest in a variety of roles in sport such as performer, official, coach at AS Level and specialise in one of these at A2 Level.

The content of the course will address current contemporary topics in sport such as the impact in the use of ergogenic aids, technology and the increase in commercialism of sport.

Assessment

AS Examinations

Unit 1  Opportunities for, and the effects of , leading to a healthy and active lifestyle.

2 hour written examination

60% of the AS grade, 30% of A Level

Unit 2 Analysis and evaluation of practical activity as a performer and/or in an adopted role.

Internal Assessment and external moderation

(100 marks) 40% of the AS grade, 20% of A Level

 

A2 Examinations

Unit 3 Optimising performance and evaluating contemporary issues within sport.

2 hour written examination

30% of the A Level grade

Unit 4 Optimising practical performance in a competitive situation.

Internal Assessment and external moderation

(100 marks) 20% of  A Level
