Business AS Level at Queens Park Community School

Course description

Students are introduced to business through building knowledge of core business concepts and applying them to business contexts to develop a broad understanding of how businesses work. Students are encouraged to use an enquiring, critical and thoughtful approach to the study of business, to understand that business behaviour can be studied from a range of perspectives, and to challenge assumptions.

Course content

A Level Business covers the following themes:
Theme 1: Marketing and people
meeting customer needs
the market
marketing mix and strategy
managing people
entrepreneurs and leaders
Theme 2: Managing business
raising finance
financial planning
managing finance
resource management
external influences.
The AS level is embedded in the A level: Themes 1 and 2 are the same for both the AS and A level specifications
Theme 3: Business decisions and strategy
Business objectives and strategy
Business growth
Global marketing
Influences on business decisions
Assessing competitiveness
Theme 4: Global Business
Global markets and business expansion
Global industries and companies

Entry requirements

The course has a focus on mathematical skills required in business (10% of the course) so you will need to have grade 5 in Mathematics GCSE, you also need to write well so should have a grade 5 in English. If you have studied Business Studies, a B grade is required, if you haven’t we will accept a 5 in a humanities subject. We will make exceptions in certain cases but you must come and talk to us to agree this.


There are two 1½ exam papers at AS Level, each worth 80 marks. Your AS grade will not
contribute towards your overall grade should you continue on to A level.

Future opportunities

You will develop transferable skills that support university study and employment, including high level numeracy and communication, an understanding of the business environment and commercial awareness.

You can progress from this qualification to:
Higher education courses such as business management, business administration, accountancy and finance, human resource management, marketing, retail management, tourism management and international business
A wide range of careers ranging from banking, sales, product management and general management to working in public sector organisations or charities
