Infomation Technology OCR Cambridge Technicals Level 3 at WALSALL ACADEMY

Course description

A course in ICT will open doors in both an academic or career based pathway, when the course has been set up it has been specifically designed to meet the needs of both universities and businesses alike. All areas of employment demand every-increasing IT skills to be held by its members and a qualification that is both skill and theory based can offer the foundation for further study at University or careers in public and private sector organ isations in area such as: E-Commerce, Business Administration, Network Management, Finance Software Engineering, Systems Analysis, Web Development, Web Admin Programming, Knowledge Management and Telecommunications. We have had students continue to study ICT and computing as Universities including Staffordshire and Birmingham.

The opportunities for students of Information Technology, on completion of full time education, are vast. It provides the skills required for study at Walsall Academy and also for university, college or work. With the course being newly created it is at the cutting edge of IT developments therefore needs to attract students to it that are fast moving and dynamic.

We expect all students to demonstrate a high level of motivation and have the capacity for hard work. Sixth Form work is demanding and students are expected to take increased responsibility for their own learning through supported self-study and wider reading of the historical context.

Excellent attendance is vital if students are to benefit from the courses.

Course content

As well as an engaging IT curriculum, there is also the opportunity to study high level programming languages as a Session 3 activity, these include Python, Raspberry Pi, ActionScript and Mind Storm.

OCR IT Cambridge Technicals Level 3 – Extended Certificate (Equivalent to Single Award)

Unit 1 - Fundamentals of IT (Examination unit – externally assessed)

Unit 2 - Global Information (Examination unit – externally assessed)

Unit 3 - Cyber Security (Examination unit – externally assessed)

Unit 8 - Managing ICT Projects (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 9 - Using Spreadsheet Software (Coursework unit – internally assessed)


OCR IT Cambridge Technicals Level 3 – Diploma (Equivalent to Double Award)

All of the above units will need to be covered along with six from the units below:

Unit 4 - Computer Networks (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 11 - Systems Analysis and Design (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 12 - Mobile Technology (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 16 - Developing a Smarter Planet (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 17 - Internet of Everything (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 18 - Computer Systems - Hardware (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 19 - Computer Systems - Software (Coursework unit – internally assessed)

Unit 20 - IT Technical Support (Coursework unit – internally assessed

Entry requirements

4 GCSE’s (grades A*-C) or equivalent

Grade 4 in GCSE English, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE ICT or equivalent

Students must satisfactorily pass their AS ICT to at least grade D to be allowed to continue to full A level in Year 13
