Course description
Availability
Art is available at both AS and A2 levels for pupils who have gained at least an A grade at GCSE.
Subject
Art offers a distinctive way of learning, where seeing, thinking and making are combined in a powerful form of visual and tactile communication. Pupils are encouraged to be creative, to enquire and question, and to make connections and synthesise ideas.
Department
The Art Department consists of three full-time members of staff, one part-time Photography teacher who is also our Technician and a part-time Art Historian.
The department has four light and spacious studios, one of which is designated specifically for the Sixth Form, who may work there both in and out of timetabled teaching time. The Art History classroom has an excellent selection of resources, with books covering Art History through to contemporary practice and a large selection of slides, videos and computer software; each classroom is equipped with computers and inkjet printers.
Course content
The AS and A2 Art curriculum follows the Edexcel Fine Art specification codes 9FAO/1 and 9FAO/2 respectively. The AS is a stand-alone qualification with students being examined at the end of their lower sixth year. The AS will not contribute to the overall A2 qualification. The A2 course is a two-year linear course with students being examined at the end of their upper sixth year. Pupils will be expected to make the decision whether to take the AS course or the full two – year A2 linear course before commencing work in the lower sixth. Pupils have opportunities to work individually and collaboratively to identify, discuss and resolve complex problems. They manipulate materials, processes and technologies, responding, experimenting and adapting their thinking to arrive at different solutions. They develop knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, the achievements of artists, craftspeople and designers from different cultures, past and present. This informs and enables the development of pupils’ creative practice. Pupils are encouraged to visit as many museums and galleries as possible in order to see art and design in context.
