Public Services Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma/90 Credit Diploma at Middlesbrough College

Course description

Students will be given the skills and knowledge which will equip them to go onto employment into the public services. It will also give them a wide range of subject knowledge which will enable them to apply for a wide range of higher education courses. The course is split into 3 parts; Outward bounds units, classroom based units and sport units.

Course content

Students will study the following units:- Year 1 Unit 1: Government, policies and the public services Unit 2: Leadership and teamwork in the public services Unit 3: Citizenship and diversity Unit 5: Physical preparation, health and lifestyle Unit 6: Fitness testing and training for the public services Unit 10: Skills for land based activities Unit 22: Aspects of the legal system and the law making process. Unit 24: Current and media affairs in the public service Year 2 Unit 4: Understanding discipline in the public services Unit 8: Understand the impact of war, conflict and terrorism Unit 9: Outdoor and adventurous expeditions Unit 12: Crime and its effects on society Unit 15: Planning and management of major incidents Unit 17: Police Powers Unit 21: Custodial care services Unit 30: Practical team sports Unit 31: Exercise, health and lifestyle Unit 32: Instructing physical activity

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at C and above must include Maths or English. "If you do not have a Grade A to C in English and/or Maths, you will be required to continue studying these subjects as part of your Study Programme."


Assessment methods are through the completion of written and practical assignments.

Future opportunities

All students who complete the course can progress into any of the public services, uniformed and non-uniformed. For higher education our students have progressed onto a wide range of undergraduate programmes from Criminology to Animal Management. The College Careers Service is available to all our students. We can help you when deciding which course or option you wish to take. During your course we ensure you develop employability skills and gain relevant experience. We provide information, advice and support when completing your course and progressing to work or going into higher education. When applying for University we can provide support with the UCAS application and Student Finance.
