Spanish AS/A Level at South Dartmoor Community College

Course description

Whatever your chosen career, possession of skills in one or more Modern Languages will, without any doubt, make you a more flexible, adaptable and mobile citizen of the new open Europe.

Course content

The course will convert your GCSE pass to a high level of spoken and written grammatical accuracy, personal communication and intimate knowledge of Spanish speaking countries. At all times the culture of the relevant countries is highlighted.

The emphasis is on studying the language by using Spanish in connection with in-depth study of topical issues. You will study technological and social change, looking at the multicultural nature of Hispanic society. You will study highlights of Hispanic artistic culture, including a focus on Spanish regional identity and the cultural heritage of past civilisations. There is also an opportunity to learn about aspects of the diverse political landscape of the Hispanic world.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE passes at grade C or above to include GCSE at Grade B in Spanish.


Paper 1 tests listening, reading and writing. This paper assesses aspects of Hispanic society, artistic culture in the Hispanic world, multiculturalism in Hispanic society, aspects of political life in Hispanic society and grammar. It contributes to 40% of the A Level grade.

Paper 2 is a writing exam that requires full answers in Spanish in response to a set text or two shorter written responses to stimulus material. It contributes to 30% of the A Level grade.

Paper 3 is a speaking test. The exam is based on an individual research project related to one of four sub-themes ie aspects of Hispanic society or artistic culture in the Hispanic world or multiculturalism in Hispanic society or aspects of political life in Hispanic society. The speaking test contributes to 30% of the overall A Level.
