A Level Further Mathematics at St Peter's Catholic School

Course description

Further Mathematics is an AS/A Level qualification which both broadens and deepens the mathematics covered in AS/A Level Mathematics. Any student planning to take a mathematics-rich degree (this covers a very wide range of academic areas - Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc., as well as Mathematics itself) will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, at least to AS Level. Some prestigious university courses will only accept students with Further Mathematics qualifications! Further Mathematics qualifications are strongly welcomed on any maths-related course and often receive preferential offers because of this.

AS Course Outline

FP1 Further Pure; M1 Mechanics; D2 Decision Maths FP1 (Further Pure 1) is compulsory module introducing Complex Numbers, Argand Diagrams, Matrix Algebra, Parametric Equations and Formal Proofs. Applied modules in Mechanics will also be studied involving Vectors, Particle Dynamics, Forces & Moments. Applied Modules D2 will extend knowledge from D1.

A2 Course Outline

FP2 Further Pure; S2 Statistics; M2 Mechanics FP2 (Further Pure 2) is compulsory module extending Complex Numbers and solving Differential Equations. Applied Modules. S2 will extend knowledge from S1.

Entry requirements

In order to study AS/A2 Further Mathematics we require you have at least a good grade A in GCSE Mathematics. Mathematics A Level must also be studied alongside Further Mathematics. Students need to demonstrate a strong commitment to their studies and an enjoyment of mathematics is essential.
