Geography AS and A Level at Park House School
Geography is a well subscribed post-16 subject. It combines well with Sciences and Technology, Social Sciences and the Arts to offer access to a range of degree courses and careers. The Geography Department is well resourced with up-to-date text books, DVDs, computer software, journals and annual subscriptions to geographical magazines. Fieldwork is an integral part of the course. The emphasis of the course at AS Level is on investigating spatial and temporal change in physical and human environments.
AS Course Summary
Unit 1 Global Challenges
60% of AS / 30% of A Level
Students will study the meaning, causes, impacts and management of global challenges. How we can influence global challenges through our own lives. There are two compulsory topics:
World at Risk
Unit 2 Geographical Investigations
40% of AS / 20% of A Level
A closer look at how physical and human issues influence lives and can be managed. Students choose two topics (one physical and one human) from: extreme weather; crowded coasts; unequal spaces (rural and urban disparities) and rebranding places (regeneration of urban and

Unit 3 Contested Planet
30% of A Level
The use and management of resources is a key issue for Geography in today’s world. Many resources are finite and rising consumption means that difficult decisions over the use of resources will have to be made more frequently. Students will study six compulsory topics:

Unit 4 Geographical Research
20% of overall A Level
Students select one option from a choice of six:
Tectonic Activity and Hazards
Cold Environment – Landscapes and Change
Life on the Margins – the Food Supply Problem
The World of Cultural Diversity
Pollution and Human Health at Risk
Consuming the Rural Landscape – Leisure and Tourism
At least a grade B at GCSE. Staff will assess the individual merits of students interested in taking Geography as an A Level option.
All fieldwork/visits are in Year 12 (costs are estimated).
Coasts Fieldwork Swanage – three days residential – £150
Rebranding Fieldwork Bristol – one day
