Philosophy and Ethics GCE A Level at Oriel High School

Course description

Philosophy and Ethics is a course that develops critical and reflective learners. It will broaden your understanding of not only religion, but of the modern world and reality.
This is a course for students who have an interest in deeper thinking, analysing ideas and debating.
This would be the ideal subject for anyone wanting to go into any profession where they’ll need to construct an argument e.g. lawyer. It can also lead well into degrees such as history, medicine, social sciences due to its varied content.

Course content

Independent study commitment (approximately 4 hours per week)
AS content includes:
»» Philosophy: Ancient philosophers;
Arguments on the existence/ non-existence of God; The nature of the soul, mind and body.
»» Ethics: Ethical theories; Application of theories to contemporary issues e.g.
sexual and medical ethics.
»» Developments in religious thought:
How religious beliefs vary though history and in the modern world; Sources of authority; Expression of religious identity.
A Level content includes:
»» Philosophy: The problem of evil; Ideas about the nature of God; Issues in
religious language.
»» Ethics: Debates surrounding conscience and free will; Influences of religion and philosophy on ethical thought.
»» Developments in religious thought: Social and historical developments in
theology; The relationship between religion and society

Entry requirements

Students need to have achieved a minimum of a grade B from GCSE RE.
If students have not studied RE at a GCSE standard they must have a minimum of a grade B in GCSE English Language.


How will I be assessed?
Philosophy and Ethics is assessed via 3 exam papers (one for each unit), which will require students to write extended essays.
Students will be required to practice and develop these skills by writing essays throughout the course.
