Painting and Decorating Level 3 Diploma at Hartlepool College of Further Education

Course description

The Level 3 Diploma in Painting and Decorating qualification has been developed for delivery in a training environment and has been designed to further develop the skills, knowledge and understanding of learners who work, or want to work, as a Painter and Decorator in the construction industry. It also serves as the technical certificate for an apprentice, and takes the skills learned at Level 2 a lot further.

Course content

The qualification consists of 10 mandatory units:

3 Core Units

  • Health & Safety
  • Information, Quantities and Communication
  • Construction Technology

And 7 Trade Units

  • Access Equipment
  • Preparation of Surfaces
  • Applying Paint
  • Decorative Effects
  • Specialist Paperhanging
  • Architectural Features
  • Airless Spray

However, two of the units can be carried over from the Level 2 Diploma leaving eight to complete. Full time students will also experience a two week work placement with a local company.

Entry requirements

The completion of the Level 2 Diploma in Construction (Painting and Decorating) is required.


Assessment of learning criteria is via on-line multiple choice examinations and practical assessments, which are marked by the tutor.

L2 Apprenticeship (company placement required).
