Further Mathematics at Dereham Sixth Form College
Further Mathematics will give you a greater insight into the beauty of Mathematics, and how the structures of the different topics fit together. It also shows how it can be applied, even from quite abstract beginnings. The A level Further Mathematics course is not just for those who enjoy Mathematics or who want to go on and study it at University; it is also highly recommended for anyone who might want to take a degree at a good university in Physics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Computing, Economics and more.
The Russell Group of top universities guide says that Further Mathematics is one of the subjects which give the student ‘the most options’. One of those universities said ‘our students who had Further Mathematics A level coped with the transition from school to university much better...’
As with Mathematics, we follow the AQA specification for Further Mathematics.
This one year course is not just for the exceptionally talented; it is more approachable than you might think. For students who don’t want to progress to A2, it can also be taken in Y13.
In this year you explore areas of Mathematics which will be completely new to you, covered in three units:
- Roots of Equations
- Complex Numbers. i2=-1
- Summation of Series
- Rational Functions and Conic Sections
- Probability Distributions
- Hypothesis Testing
- Mathematical Modelling in Mechanics
- Forces and Kinematics
- Projectile Motion
The second year is more challenging. In it you will study a further three units, which extend the AS syllabus:
- Further Complex Numbers
- Inverse Trigonometric and Hyperbolic Functions
- Summing Series by Differences and by Induction
- Roots of Polynomials
- Polar Coordinates
- Series and Limits
- Further Differential Equations
- Moments and Centres of Mass
- Work and Energy
- Variable acceleration and Motion in a Circle
A* or A in Maths GCSE. Must be taken alongside A level Maths.
