Retail BTEC First Certificate at Shenley Brook End School

Course description

Retail: The course has 3 modules focusing on retail, sales and advertising and customer service. The learning is split between theory, practical sessions and off site visits. Students learn about the practicalities of working in retail. CoPE Certificate course which allows students to develop their skills in a variety of areas. These include; working with others, problem solving, improving their own learning, giving a presentation, conducting some research and holding a discussion. All of the work is assessed through a variety of challenges that range from enterprise to RE and a portfolio is put together which is then assessed. Upon successful completion of the course, students who pass are awarded a GCSE grade B Enterprise An NCfE course exploring enterprising capabilities. Students research what it means to be 'enterprising' and start their own companies. Students are required to run the company for a period of 18 months with a view to making a product that can be sold. A portfolio course which has no exam element.

Future opportunities

This course offers you a specialist qualification for working in areas of business. It could lead onto other vocational qualifications such as a BTEC National Certificate or Diploma in Retail or Fashion and Clothing. You could also do an NVQ as part of an Apprenticeship programme related to retail, fashion or clothing. With further training, you could go into a job related to retail such as a Shop Assistant or Manager, Fashion Designer or a Retail Buyer who selects the clothes for shops to sell. The course also provides you with the knowledge, understanding and skills that many employers are looking for, especially in areas of retail, clothing and fashion. Students can continue to study retail at the local college or through the Centre:MK Skill Centre. Students could also continue to study on the Access Course at Shenley Brook End or get employment in the retail sector.
