Automotive Maintenance and Repair Level 1 at Wiltshire College

Course description

The motor vehicle aspects of this course will be taught in the college's workshops and technical classrooms. All students will need to take Maths and English functional skills unless they have a GSCE that exempts them.

Normally for this course students will attend College for 2-3 days a week.


Those wishing to pursue careers in all aspects of the Motor Industry. The course will provide the basic vehicle knowledge to perform a variety of roles.

Course content

This course provides the basic understanding knowledge and practical skills required of someone starting out in the repair and servicing of Motor Vehicles.


This is a broad based course which leads to the City and Guilds 4290 VRQ (Vocationally Related Qualification) Level 1.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to routine servicing
  • Health and Safety in the working environment
  • Introduction to the automotive workshop.
  • Introduction to vehicle electrics
  • Working with others

Optional units

Students that progress above the normal rate will have the option to take other units that will enhance their training and allow them a greater understanding of all aspects of the motor vehicle repair trade.

Entry requirements

4 GCSE at grade D or above including mathematics (or Functional Skills Maths – Entry level) and English (or Functional Skills English – Entry level)


Students on this course will sit two City and Guilds GOLA online examination and take vehicle and workshop based assessments. Function skills are assessed by examination.

There could be the need to do small amounts of work at home and revision before an examination. Final Qualification: City and Guilds 4290 Diploma in Automotive Maintenance and Repair Level 1

Future opportunities

Educational Progression

Students will normally use this qualification to move onto a Level 2 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance.

Employment opportunities
Students that complete this qualification will have a basic overview of how a vehicle works and some theory knowledge. Students can use this to obtain an apprenticeship in a garage or to look for work in an associated motor trade.
