Cambridge Technical Level 2 Certificate in Information Technology (OCR) at Hampton Sixth Form

Course description

The Cambridge Technical Certificate in Information Technology is a Level 2 qualification and is equivalent to one GCSE. The qualification is designed for students who are interested in an introduction into the study of creating IT systems alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in IT. Students will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business and using IT to communicate and share information.


Students will study the following units :



Unit 1 – Essentials for ICT (M)

  • Hardware Components
  • Software
  • Installing and upgrading
  • World Wide Web
  • Benefits of ICT in business


Unit 2 – Essentials of cyber security (M)

  • Learn about cyber security
  • Understand threats and vulnerabilities
  • Organisations and minimizing impact from incidents

Assessment – 45 minute computer based test

Assessment  -  1 hour computer based test



Unit 17 – Using data analysis software (M)

  • Understand the data used by businesses
  • Select software to analyse data for business purpose
  • Use software to analyse data for a business purpose
  • Present results of data analysis to the client


Unit 16 – Using social media channels for business (O)

  • Know the social media channels used in business
  • Select social media channels to meet business needs
  • Create content for social media channels to meet business needs

Entry requirements

This course will be taken alongside other Level 2 courses and will suit students re-taking their Maths or English GCSEs and require an additional level 2 qualification. We would ideally like students to have achieved four D grades at GCSE.


2 units - 2 computer based tests

2 units - coursework one mandatory and one optional. Both are assessed through internally set and assessed coursework assignments

Future opportunities

By completing and passing this course you will be able to study the subject at a higher level or gain entry level employment in the IT industry.  This course is equivalent to one GCSE in weighting.

The qualification enables leaners to develop knowledge and skills needed for entry-level roles related to IT, including vocational apprenticeship roles and train

Information Technology links particularly well with Business Studies. It also works well with subjects such as mathematics, physics, science, arts or technology.
