Health and Social Care - BTEC (single & double) - Vocational at Baxter College

Course description

This subject is an excellent starting point for those of you who wish to go into employment in Health and Social Care. If you are thinking of a career in a caring area, or going on to university for nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, paramedic training, then this course is for you! 

You do not need to have studied Health and Social Care in Years 10 and 11 to be able to do this course.

Content Units of Study


BTEC NATIONAL SUBSIDIARY DIPLOMA- is equivalent to one GCE A level. 
It is a 60-credit and 360 guided-learning-hour (GLH) qualification that consists of mandatory units plus optional units. 


BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA- is equivalent to two GCE A levels. 
It is a 120-credit and 720 guided-learning-hour (GLH) qualification that consists of mandatory units plus optional units that provide for a combined total of 120 credits. For the double award there will be more units for pupils to complete in comparison to the single award. 

This course will allow you to develop your independent study skills, get involved in visits and work placements and take charge of your own learning. Lesson activities are based around group work and discussion.


If you want to follow a career in any of the caring sectors, Health, Social Care or Early Years, then this is the right course. If you are thinking of teaching in Primary Schools, then again, this subject is a good choice. Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Nursery Nurses often start with Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care. Many of our former students have gone on to study university courses in areas within Health and Social Care, particularly within nursing and teaching.

Work Placement

Students may be required to complete a work experience placement as part of this qualification.

Entry requirements

You should preferably have at least 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. If you have studied Health and Social Care before, you would preferably have achieved at least a Merit grade or an A*-C in Child Development. You will need to be hard working, self-motivated and very organised!
