English Language A level at Wolsingham School

Course description

In this course you will learn about how your native language works, how it became what it is today and how it is changing. The AS and A Level courses are now two separate courses, however all students will take AS Language at the end of Year 12 before proceeding to the full A Level. This will enable you to become a more effective communicator and to maximize your potential within the workplace.

Course content

AS English Language

Paper 1
Exploring and understanding spoken and written language in use
Impact of purposes, audiences and contexts
Analysis and investigation of language varieties

Paper 2
We will learn about the diversity of language in terms of its variety in a range of social contexts. We also look at attitudes towards language.

The AS course is 100% exam based. 

A Level English Language

Paper 1
Textual analysis based on children’s language development and language change over time.

Paper 2
A study of the diversity of language and how language changes over time.

Non exam assessment
A language investigation
A piece of original writing and commentary
